There are a few decent cheaps places to stay in New York but forget about finding a cheap room in New York. For anything half decent, good location, clean  -you’re looking at around $150-$200 for a private room. One way to save money in New York is by choosing to stay in a hostel. Based on my recent trip to the Big Apple, I’ve rounded up my best budgets places to stay in New York that offer great value in terms of location, price and facilities.

1. HI New York City Hostel

HI New York City Hostel is one of my favourite cheap places to stay in New York. I love its fantastic location in Manhattan’s famous Upper West Side which is just 2 blocks from Central Park plus you have a subway stop around the corner which connects you to the rest of the city.

Spicy noodles at Xian’s Famous Foods!

It is also a really cool neighbourhood -I discovered some great places to eat and drink on the doorstep of the hostel. Just around the corner there is Malaysia Grill which offers classic Malaysian dishes like Roti Canai and Nasi Lemak at really affordable prices. There’s also Xian’s Famous Foods – one of Bourdain’s recommended eats in NYC where you can savour Xian style spicy noodle soups with delicious dumplings. Also a short walk from the hostel brings you to the vibrant neighborhood of Harlem and also the Columbia University campus where you can go for beers at the very relaxed Arts and Crafts Beer Parlour.

Lounge area, HI New York City Hostel

One of the other reasons I’d recommend HI New York City Hostel is the wide range of facilities on offer to make your stay comfortable. They have an excellent in-house cafe/deli where they serve monstrous sized sandwiches with tasty fillings ranging from meatballs marinated in tomato sauce to smoked salmon or pesto chicken.

Great place to chill- Courtyard at HI New York City Hostel

 Bacon-and-egg-bagels-breakfast-HI-NYC-hostel

Bacon and egg bagels for breakfast!

They also serve the classic NYC style bagels filled with bacon and eggs. There’s also pretty decent coffee, juices, fruits, cereals and muesli available. We would grab our breakfast from the cafe and choose to sit in their huge, beautiful outdoor patio-perfect in the summer. We found the garden to be an oasis of calm to relax in with a book after a busy day of exploring New York. ( They have a bird feeder and a water fountain that attracts all kinds of bird life-was very therapeutic to sit there and watch the birds take a bath ) They have an indoor seating area for eating plus also 2 lounges with plenty of sofas to sink into, enjoy your coffee or just read or book, browse the internet on the free wifi. There’s also a pool table area plus a decent laundry room for doing all your laundry. On the ground floor they also have a very large well equipped kitchen which is great for cooking -New York can be pretty expensive so having a kitchen to cook in is a lifesaver.

Premium dorms at HI NYC Hostel

Inside peek at the premium dorms in HI NYC Hostel

It is a huge hostel with over 667 beds. There are no private rooms for couples -only dorms here.  You can choose from male, female and mixed dorms ( for couples ) plus from 4, 6, 8, 10 and 12 bed dorms. For example a bed in a 12 bed female dorm ranges from  $50-$60 USD per night. For the location it is a really good deal. Yup, you do have to share with 11 other people but the beds are very comfortable, rooms are clean  and beds are spaced out so it never feels too cramped. The hostel provides you with a set of fresh sheets, blanket, and a decent pillow. Each bunk has an assigned locker next to it for your belongings. Just bring your own lock.

Another good reason for staying at HI New York City hostel is the range of free activities they offer. This range from free activities like a free walking tour of Brooklyn during twilight to watch sunset over Manhattan from Dumbo or you can join the welcome party on Thursday where you can connect with fellow hostel travellers over free drinks. There are also a number of paid but moderately priced tours which include a tour of all the best speakeasy bars of New York or visiting some of NYC’s best rooftop bars-prices for these tours are just $10. I joined their free ( by donation ) weekly improv comedy club shows in the basement where a bunch of budding local NYC comedians entertained us for an hour. Quality of performers varied which is to be expected  but overall, I was pretty impressed and the hour just flew by.

Other things to note-The staff during our stay were helpful. I found them to be quite informal and distant when compared to staff from European hostels but that’s maybe a difference in hostel cultures.

2. The Local NYC Hostel

The bar- The Local NYC Hostel

Private room- The Local NYC Hostel

Situated in the LIC neighbourhood of Queens  just a few subway stops from Manhattan and Brooklyn, The Local NYC hostel is another excellent budget friendly option for staying in NYC.

One good reason to stay here is that they have a own rooftop terrace which offers you panoramic views of Manhattan’s skyline.

The hostel has a relaxed chilled vibe with an onsite bar, open plan lobby with long tables, lots of comfy sofas and chairs you to kickback in and relax, read a book or work from your laptop. At the back they have a large exhibition space where they showcase works of local artists and also have a projector where they show movies. The rooms are clean, comfortable- bunk beds come with their own private plug, reading light and lockers for you to secure your stuff. Staff hand out free locks to guests.

In terms of where to stay in New York city on a budget, Queens is a great choice. There is a number of excellent bars and restaurants to choose from-my pick of the bunch is the LIC Market where you enjoy tasty salads,  range of delicious sandwiches ranging from ‘Slow Cooked Pork’ ($13) to Grilled Cheese ($12) and simple dishes like Rigatoni pasta or signature slowed cooked pork with rice and beans. ($15) Other good budget option is Aunt Rosie’s Diner- an old school diner where you can dig into classic NYC comfort food like Beef Brisket, Chicken Parmagiana & Chilli over Rice.

Room rates start from €35 a bed in a 6 bed dorm and €100 for a private ensuite booking via Hostelworld.com

rooms NYC Moore Hostel

3. NY Moore Hostel

Situated in the artsy hip neighbourhood of East Williamsburg, NY Moore Hostel scores highly for their spacious ( high ceilings) , clean and cosy rooms, super friendly staff, facilities like a well equipped kitchen and nice common room (with Netflix) plus added bonus of free tea/coffee. It is a little less on the quiet side and not as social as HI NYC hostel. Little remote in terms of location but  excellent if you’re looking to explore Brooklyn which is my favourite neighbourhood in New York.

Booking via Hostelworld.com, rates for a bed in a female only dorm starts at €49

4. American Dream Hostel

American Dream Hostel

If you’re looking for a more homely hostel with a personal touch, consider the American Dream Hostel , a family owned New York City Hostel that has been welcoming travelers for over 20 years.

The location of the hostel is a big plus- located in the Gramercy Park district you are right in the heart of Manhattan and just a mile walk from the Empire State Building and a 4-minute walk from 23 Street subway station. The rooms and bathrooms are squeaky clean, the owners offer a very flexible check-in and check-out policy so you leave your luggage in your room or in their storage room. The staff are friendly with lots of tips for things to do in New York. Other plus is the offer of a free continental breakfast – mainly consists of pastries, fruit plus they have plenty of bread stocked in the kitchen so while nothing special, saves you a bit of money. Plus there is a shared kitchen you can use and a coin operated laundry.

Booking via Hostelworld.com, rates for a private room ( with shared bathroom) start at $100 a night and private double ( with shared bathroom) for $120 a night.

5. LIC Hotel

This casual hotel is conveniently located just a 2-minute walk from a subway station, making it easily accessible for guests to explore New York City. Situated close to shops, the hotel is also within 3 miles of major attractions like the iconic Empire State Building and the renowned Museum of Modern Art (MoMA).

The hotel offers bright and comfortable rooms with hardwood floors, providing a welcoming ambiance for guests. In-room amenities include Wi-Fi access, flat-screen TVs, and minifridges, ensuring a pleasant stay for travelers.

Each morning, guests can enjoy a delicious breakfast buffet served in an airy dining area. This provides a great start to the day before venturing out to explore the city. Additionally, the hotel boasts a rooftop terrace with picnic tables and stunning city views, offering a perfect spot to relax and take in the sights after a day of sightseeing.

Via Booking.com, rates for a private room starts at €100 a night.

6. OYO Times Square

Last but not least, have also a look at OYO Times Square hotel. I would pick this budget hotel in New York purely for the fantastic location right in Times Square. Their basic standard full rooms are simple and modern, equipped with a spacious bed, flat-screen HDTV, Bose sound system and a desk to work from. Showers are nice and complimentary toiletries.

Again, purely for the location and convenience, I would pick this hotel.

Neuharlingersiel, a bucolic fishing village on Germany’s North Sea Coast https://budgettraveller.org/neuharlingersiel-travel-guide/ https://budgettraveller.org/neuharlingersiel-travel-guide/#respond Tue, 30 Jul 2019 20:18:25 +0000 https://budgettraveller.org/?p=12989 Maybe its the romantic in me or maybe a sign of my age. There is something to be said about old fishing harbours and just sitting there, watching the world go by. Vociferous seagulls sail past brightly painted fishing boats while century old red brick buildings sulk in the background. I stand for an eternity looking at this scene and it makes me so happy. The smug happiness you have when fate unexpectedly brings you to a beautiful place you’ve never heard of.

This is Neuharlingersiel, a small fishing village on Germany’s North Sea coast. While not a destination in its own right, it is a popular jumping off point for anyone wanting to visit the East Frisian Island of Spiekeroog which is just a 45 minute journey away. Harlesiel, from where we had boarded our ferry earlier to Wangerooge ( if you missed it, here’s the story behind that trip ) is a 25 minute ride away.

The joy of coming to Neuharlingersiel lies in its simplicity. Scenes like this – a bucolic fishing village where you see clusters of grubby fishermen sitting propped against their boats mending their nets, while cats prowl the deck for forgotten scraps of fish. It feels like a scene from a 18th century dutch watercolour painting. For a moment standing there, you’ve been transported to a different era.

Cafe Störmhuus

Cafe Störmhuus

Sabrina tasting the classic East Frisian cake-the Ostfriesentorte at Cafe Störmhuus

There’s a fair gaggle of elderly locals keeping a close eye on proceedings. As I pop out my camera and start snapping , they look beadily at me from the string of benches lining the harbour. There are 2 or 3 excellent cafes along the harbour that are a popular draw for the locals and tourists alike. My pick of the harbour cafes is the ivy draped Cafe Störmhuus. If its a nice day perch yourself on the sunny upper rooftop deck or if its more on the chilly side, choose the cosy tearoom downstairs which offers a unique atmosphere with its fireplace and wood panelling. Choose their Ostfriesentorte , a true classic among the East Frisian desserts with delicious biscuit layer, lot of cream and brandy raisins to raise your spirits. If you’re in the mood for something more active, you can try your hand at windsurfing or kitesurfing at the Strandbar. Or just grab a beer from their bar and soak up the sun in the comfort of their extensive selection of iconic Strandkorb– colourful wicker basket chairs that are typical from this part of the world.

Strandkorb-an iconic feature of any visit to the North Sea Coast of Germany

The friendly and awesome team at DJH Neuharlingersiel Resort

DJH Neuharlingersiel Resort

We’re staying a 10 minute walk up the road from the harbour at the nearby DJH Neuharlingersiel Resort as part of our #DJHExtraordinary tour. I’ve been invited to find out more about the resort which has been billed as ‘The world’s first youth club hostel.’ I don’t have any kids so in some ways it feels like 30 years too late for me personally but still, I love the concept of an all-inclusive resort where both adults and kids can indulge in a range of activities. For kids there is a whole bunch of organised activities to choose from- from quiz to disco to film nights in the evenings to archery lessons or the option of hiring canoes or going standup paddle boarding.

Sabrina rocking the drums at the School of Rock ( To say I was terrible would be an understatement )

My pick of the facilities in the resort is their ‘School of Rock’ where you have fully equipped recording studio with drums, keyboards, guitars- you’re all set to record your own album. There’s also plenty for the big kids to indulge in too- the resort has a well stocked onsite bar with Sky Sports TV to catch all the latest sport plus  an onsite sauna with sauna, jacuzzi, steam room available to use for as little as €9.50 a day.

Sauna at DJH Neuharlingsiel

If you’re looking to stay in shape , the resort also has a small but adequate onsite gym open around the clock. The resort like many of the DJH hostels offers the option of staying on a Bed and Breakfast or Full Board basis. The food is simple but hearty food.

Accommodation options are varied-ranging from 2 bedroom family rooms with a balcony to the more the luxurious deluxe apartments that have their own lounge cum dining area, fireplace plus a huge back garden complete with swing and slide. I spent a good half of the morning soaking in the sun in that back garden. This is the future maybe for hostels-something for everyone for every kind of budget. Or do you think this is too much?

I wish I actually had places like this to visit when I was a kid. There’s a pang of jealousy when I saunter past a gleeful group of schoolkids who are gathered around one of these ridiculous rope swings that look like out of a Tarzan movie set. Some places stay timeless which is a relief and on the flipside, hostels are changing massively for everyone and that is definitely for the better.

Essential Facts

You can book a double room at the DJH Neuharlingersiel Resort on all inclusive basis for 2 people for 2 nights from €178.

For a family of 4 , you can book one of their apartments for the weekend on an all inclusive basis for €280.

For more details click here

You can reach Neuharlingersiel either by flying into Bremen airport and then taking the train from there ( 2 hour 30 minutes €25) or from Hamburg ( 3 hours 45 minutes, €40 ) Both journey require 3 to 4 changes of train so it can be tricky getting there so if you can drive ( unlike me), then hiring a car would definitely be the better option for making the most of your time to explore the North Sea coast.

Please note that my stay was covered by the Jugendherberge aka German Youth Hostel Association as part of a storytelling project I am working on called #DJHExtraordinary where we were seeking to discover some of Germany’s most unusual hostels. 9 of the best budget places to stay in Prague ( Updated Feb 2023 ) https://budgettraveller.org/7-of-the-best-budget-places-to-stay-in-prague/ https://budgettraveller.org/7-of-the-best-budget-places-to-stay-in-prague/#comments Thu, 23 Feb 2017 18:43:32 +0000 http://budgettraveller.org/?p=9445

Excited to be finally be able to share with you 8 of my favourite budget places to stay in Prague. There’s a nice mix of budget hotels and hostels to choose from, depending on your budget. Look forward to your feedback and if you are visiting Prague, do checkout my recently updated guide to the 24 best things to do in Prague  plus my tips on the best things to do on a budget in Prague‘s Old Town. Before we jump into my recommendations, I’ll answer a few key questions that will help you decide which hostel in Prague is best for you.

Where is the best area to stay in Prague

Most of the hostels featured here are in the Old Town. If you are first time visitor to the city and here for a short break then the Staré Město aka Old Town is the best choice. Even though it has become a tourist hotspot , especially in the summer month the relative distance to all the key landmarks Astronomical Clock, Old Town Square and the Church of Our Lady before Týn, make the Old Town a good choice. My personal favourite neighbourhoods is Zizkov which borders Stare Mesto and the Hradcarny ( Castle ) area. The main train station (Hlavni Nadrazi) is a just a few hops on the tram plus Zizkov has the unique distinction of having the highest density of bars per square km, more than anywhere in Europe. You can drink some fabulous Pilsner Urquell on draft for as little as €2.50/€3 a pint. My other favourite neighbourhood is the industrial district called Holesovice ( where Sir Toby’s is located ) aka Prague 7 where you have access to some great places to eat and drink plus the fabulous Cross Country Club, the best alternative club in Prague is here and…. the Letna Beer Garden ( with the best view of Prague ) is a hop, skip and jump away.

Are hostels in Prague safe?

If you are questioning whether to stay in a hostel or hotel in Prague, I would emphatically recommend hostels because Prague has some of the best hostels in Europe in terms of design, in terms of character plus they are well run by great team of experienced staff and are extremely safe. All the hostels offer lockers. They will have a member of staff working 24 hours and will have security cameras installed. In terms of general tips, always travel with a padlock , don’t leave your valuables lying around and always have a comprehensive travel insurance.

So without further, adieu, I present to you the 8 best budget places to stay in Prague.

1) Czech Inn Prague

Address: Francouzska 76, Praha 101 00.

If you want to escape the hustle and bustle of the touristy city-centre of Prague, we recommend a stay at the Czech Inn, in Prague’s upbeat Vrsovice Neighbourhood.

This part of town, previously a working class area, has been recently revived into a hipster/artsy neighbourhood. The hostel is accessible (Krymska stop) via the 10, 16, 22 trams or the 135 Bus from Florenc bus station.

The Czech Inn provides the option of private rooms or beds in hostel dorms. You can choose from 4-36 bed dorms. Some of these are all-male or all-female.

The private rooms are fitted out with all sorts of creature comforts, but the premium dorms are pretty fancy too. These dorms consist of 2 bedrooms with a common kitchen and living room area, more than one bathroom and no bunk beds. The standard dorms are more basic but are due an upgrade.

Czech Inn has the option of breakfast for €6. Other great amenities include free linen and Wi-Fi, free local maps sharing points of interest, towels for rent, borrowing of alarm clocks, hairdryers and adapters.

An on site bar in the basement with microbrew bar and scheduled entertainment, make this a lively spot at night.

The beautiful and unique decor make this one of the most visually interesting hostels I have ever visited.

Rates: Booking via Hostelworld.com , dorm beds start from €12, premium dorm beds €19, private double rooms €60 (all low season).

2) The MadHouse Prague

The MadHouse Prague is one of the few party hostels which strikes the perfect balance between being a social space where you can connect with other travellers but also allowing you to have your own space and switch off if needed- a rare thing. The nice mix of international staff members are definitely the stars here and do everything to create a social environment where guests feel a sense of home and belonging. There is an extensive programme of daily activities that guests can look forward that include trips to the local beer gardens , pub crawls plus they also organise very cheap daily family dinners which is a great way to meet other fellow travellers. There is also a spacious well equipped kitchen which is where the family dinners take place and where you can enjoy a coffee Other star highlights include the comfy TV lounge full of bean bags and sofas where you can unwind with a book or catchup on your emails or Instagram feed. The dorms here are spacious and are en-suite with a further two bathrooms available on the first floor. Plus, they rate very highly for cleanliness so all in all this is a great hostel, brilliant location in the heart of Prague’s Old Town, metro + tram stop across the street and a short walk to all the key sights.

Note: There is a 18-45 Years Old age limit so keep that in mind.

Rates: Booking via Hostelworld.com, dorm beds start from €21 for a bed in a 12 bed mixed dorm and €24 for a bed in a 8 bed mixed dorms.

If you are looking for something more chill and less party, a quiet social hostel , then I highly recommend their sister hostel, RoadHouse Prague.

3) Sophie’s Hostel

Address: Melounová 2, 120 00, Czech Republic.

Miss Sophie’s Prague

The location of Sophie’s Hostel has the best of both worlds- a short tram ride or metro stop into the city centre but located in a relatively quiet corner of New Town. The hostel can be found in a pretty locale, on the edge of the Vinohrady area.

The nearest metro stop is IP Pavlova stop on the Red C line tram; IP Pavlova on the 10,11,16 or 22 trams.

Rates: Booking via Hostelworld.com prices start from €14 for a dorm bed, twin/double room €66 (all in low season).

4) Sir Toby’s

Address: Delnická 24, Praha 7, Czech Republic.

If you are not fussed about being in an upscale or central location in Prague, then Sir Toby’s is the hostel for you. You will find it in Northern Prague, in a previously industrial district called Holesovice.

The hostel more than makes up for neighbourhood ambience with the beautiful antiquated interiors. It’s a mix of several styles the antique, Art Deco- ornate yet still very affordable.

To get to the historic centre of town, avail of the 1,12,14 or 25 trams. The nearest stop to the hostel is the Delnická stop.

Regarding rooms, choose from 5 to 12 person dorm rooms that also include male or female dorms, artistically designed private rooms with wooden floors, interesting wallpaper and vintage features.

There’s a nice mix of budget hotels and hostels to choose from, depending on your budget. Look forward to your feedback and if you are visiting Amsterdam, do checkout my recently updated locals guide to Amsterdam & the best cheap eats in Amsterdam in the city. This post covers a mix of hostels and the best budget hotels in Amsterdam . Before we jump into my recommendations, I’ll answer a few key questions that will help you decide which hostel in Amsterdam is best for you. Note: Prices for accommodation are insane at the moment in Amsterdam, especially post pandemic. Prices tend to fluctuate from summer to winter but at the moment, rates are abnormal so keep that in mind but if you are on a tight budget, then checkout my guide to the cheapest hostels in Amsterdam.

Where is the best area to stay in Amsterdam

As a 1st time visitor to Amsterdam you will want to stay in the Amsterdam City Center or Old Centrum which is the area around Amsterdam Central Station. You will find the majority of the cheapest hostels in this area, ranging from the quite but social Ecomama to the more party friendly Flying Pig Downtown Hostel. My favourite neighbourhood in Amsterdam is De Pijp also known as the Latin Quarter that just lies to the south of the city center. Home to the fantastic Albert Cuyp market and also the Heineken Museum, this area is popular with students and creatives alike. You will find the beautiful Cocomama hostel here. If you are looking for something bit more alternative in Amsterdam but still central, I would definitely consider Amsterdam Noord which was named by Time Out as the coolest neighbourhood in Amsterdam. This former industrial area is just a short hop on the ferry across the river IJ, right behind Amsterdam Centraal Station. The excellent Clink Noord is the hostel to stay in Amsterdam Noord.

Are hostels in Amsterdam Safe?

If you are questioning whether to stay in a hostel or hotel in Amsterdam, I would emphatically recommend hostels because Amsterdam has some of the best hostels in Europe in terms of design, in terms of character plus they are well run by great team of experienced staff and are extremely safe. All the hostels offer lockers. They will have a member of staff working 24 hours and will have security cameras installed. In terms of general tips, always travel with a padlock , don’t leave your valuables lying around and always have a comprehensive travel insurance.

5 of the Best Budget Places to Stay in Venice https://budgettraveller.org/5-of-the-best-budget-places-to-stay-in-venice/ https://budgettraveller.org/5-of-the-best-budget-places-to-stay-in-venice/#comments Mon, 30 Jan 2017 13:59:55 +0000 http://budgettraveller.org/?p=8836 “Venice, it’s temples and palaces did seem like fabrics of enchantment piled to heaven.”
― Shelley.

When you visit Venice, be it for a short vacation, or a more extended sojourn you will most likely be searching for your own definition of a Venetian palace. Finding a cheap budget place to stay in Venice may seem a daunting task especially with the multitude of bewildering options. It can be an expensive city, but with the right recommendations you may just find the perfect budget palace. Consider one of the following Venetian Budget Hotel/Hostel/B&B options:

1)  Generator Venice

Sadly devoid of numerous quality hostels and budget places to stay, this floating city can, however, boast of one fabulous hostel with a great location. Enjoy views of some of some of the main sights from the comfort of

.

The location

This is one of Generator’s best (and most expensive) hostels with an unbeatable location in the heart of Venice. The exact location of is on the waterfront of the island of Giudecca. From the hostel, it is a short, single stop on the Vaparetto to the famous Piazza San Marco.

Rooms and bathrooms

The hostel building is a historic converted granary. The hostel retains all the Venetian charm but has a modern design twist to it. Highlights of the design include mosaic flooring, Rubelli textile curtains and glass chandeliers from Murano. In addition there is a huge fireplace reminiscent of Palladian craftsmanship. You can choose between private and shared rooms, some of which have views of the sea.

Visitors to the

can expect a lot of choices when it comes to room options at this hostel. There are nine different accommodation options ranging from private rooms and suites to shared dormitory rooms and double or twin rooms.

Perks that come with the dorm rooms include bunks with privacy boards, power sockets (EU only), reading lights and a lock-up storage while the perks of a private suite extend to complimentary toiletries, plush towels and an en-suite bathroom to name a few.

Facilities

Some of the facilities that come with the hostel include free Wi-Fi, an on-site bar and restaurant, 24 hour reception, chill out areas, laundry and a café to enjoy that perfect cup of coffee.

What makes Generator Venice a luxury hostel is the location and the history associated with the building. Each of the rooms has highly covetable view. Look out upon the Lido, the gardens, the Grande Canal or San Marco.

An economical option to reach the hostel is the bus followed by the ferry. Take the ATVO to Venice Piazzale Roma.

If you’re travelling by bus then ferry, take the ATVO to Venice Piazzale Roma. If arriving by air it takes 20 minutes to arrive from Marco Polo Airport or alternatively 40 minutes from Treviso Airport. From the Piazzale Roma catch the Vaparetto. The number 2 or 4.1 will take you to Giudecca Island. Alight at the Zitelle. The hostel is 100 metres away on your right hand side.

If arriving by train the Vaparetto can be availed right outside Venezia Santa Lucia Station.

Verdict

Given the scarcity of hostel options in this floating city,

have come up with a gem of a hostel with an unbeatable location. Book early due to high demand. It can get very crowded during the summer.

Cost of rooms

The Sky Suite that sleeps 1-2 people starts from €40 Per Room, shared rooms start from €16 per bed.

Address

Fondamenta Zitelle 86, Venezia.

This stylish, traditional hotel with a centre courtyard, flaunting period details yet surprisingly contemporary is the perfect budget hotel for your Venetian sojourn.

Location

The hotel area is free of thronging crowds but a little far from the main sightseeing highlights (Rialto bridge: ten minutes on foot). Given that the train station is nearby and the San Stae vaporetto stop is around the corner, this is by no means an impediment to touring Venice. Spend the day, drinking in the glorious ambience of Venice and get away from it all in relative peace, here at night.

Rooms and Facilities

The original rooms are clustered around the beautiful central courtyard. If the weather is fine, you will be treated to the free breakfast in the courtyard. Otherwise drink your morning coffee, eat your pastries and fruit in the ground floor breakfast hall while plotting your day’s itinerary.

The rooms are lofty and light-filled, graced by antique furniture pieces with vintage charm. The décor is tinged with shades of red, green and gold. The main hotel with the courtyard, small bar, Turkish bath and cluster of rooms has an adjacent annexe next door, which sleeps more people.

Though the hotel does not have an eatery on the premises there is a small bar open even during the daytime and the ideal spot to enjoy your evening aperitivo.

There is free Wi-Fi throughout the premises and the all-important air-conditioning in the rooms for those hot months. All rooms are ensuite, which is convenient.

Cost of rooms

Prices start at the £80 mark via Booking.com per night for a twin or double room. Prices will rise in peak season though.

3) Palazzo Abadessa

This ornate hotel with vintage details, antique furniture, Murano glass chandeliers is packed with Venetian charm.

Location

Situated in the quieter Canareggio district, north of Venice, this area is popular with tourists. Though distant from the main highlights of Venice, it is well connected with the historic centre and blessed with many restaurants.

Rooms and Facilities

The hotel feels very much like stepping into a small palace of a Venetian household. Everywhere you look there are small details to take in. The salon is beautifully decorated with paintings from the followers of Tintoretto so you are in for a treat. The opulent frescoed ceilings are another delightful detail.

The garden is a lovely quiet spot where you can enjoy an evening aperitivo or enjoy breakfast. The breakfast room is a nice place to enjoy a morning repast on those unseasonable days.

The hostel owners and employees are very well informed and helpful.

Cost of rooms

Though this property can be pricey in high season, watch out for those budget deals in quieter times. Prices start at the £95 mark per night.

Address

Cannaregio – Calle Priuli 4011, Venezia.

4) Venissa

If you are up for something a little quirky and a little alternative then look no further than this hotel. Enjoy your budget Venetian holiday from the seclusion of an island retreat and be treated to a gourmet restaurant on the premises in ‘Venissa’.

Location

Venissa is located on the outlying Venetian island of Mazzorbo. It is unusual in that the hotel is a converted farmhouse with two kinds of accommodation: a very budget friendly one with shared bathrooms and the minimum requirements like bedding or the more luxe option of private room and bath.

Rooms and Facilities

The island is located on a vaporetto stop and is the penultimate stop before reaching Burano.

The hotel is an oasis of calm, a world away from the hustle and bustle of central Venice and affords an alternate vision to Venetian island life. The rooms are light and bright, spacious with a contemporary feel, Spartan cleanliness but antique furniture touches.

Venissa,  home to a Michelin star gourmet restaurant has an eclectic menu, sourcing delicious ingredients supra locally, i.e. from the property’s vegetable garden and the waters of the lagoon itself.

Wi-Fi is included in the cost of the room although breakfast must be purchased separately.

Rates

Rooms are available from £90 per night.

Address

Fondamenta Santa Caterina 3, Isola di Mazzorbo.

5) Ca’ Angeli

You want to be in the midst of the hubbub of Venice you say but want to stay on budget? Do not fret. The canalside palazzo of Ca’ Angeli may be the answer to your quandary.

Location

This hotel overlooks the Grand Canal and is short distances from San Marco Square and the Rialto Bridge. The S Silvestro vaporetto stop is a few minutes walk away.

The free breakfast is plentiful, of very good quality (certain organic food items used wherever possible) and is served in an elegant waterfront dining room. Welcome to France’s leading gastro hostel https://budgettraveller.org/welcome-to-frances-leading-gastro-hostel/ https://budgettraveller.org/welcome-to-frances-leading-gastro-hostel/#respond Tue, 03 Jan 2017 15:12:43 +0000 http://budgettraveller.org/?p=9255 Awarded the best hostel in France in 2016, Slo Living Hostel Lyon is a great combination of a lively convivial atmosphere and a relaxing setting. Located only 10 min away from the heart of downtown Lyon, you will enjoy its outside patio full of hammocks and plants, its comfortable mattresses and very clean spaces. Their friendly and helpful staff members are always glad to share tips and great addresses in town. Try their Slo Living Hostel App for walking and cycling itineraries in Lyon, it’s free and usable in airplane mode.

The location

Slo Living Hostel is located in the Guillotière neighborhood, a multicultural animated part of town.  Some of the streets close by can be noisy at night but the hostel is in the middle of a very quiet street, which is a real advantage when you need to rest! It will take you less then 20 minutes on foot to get to great sights like the Vieux Lyon (old town from the Renaissance period), beautiful historical squares and the most famous museums.

Lyon’s main train station is located only a 15 min walk away! During your stay, you won’t even need to get a metro/bus pass because every point of interest in town is walkable from Slo Living Hostel.

Rooms and bathrooms

I particularly enjoyed the spacious and well-organised dorms. Even if their 2-bed dorm is little bit too small it is convenient. You can borrow a padlock at the reception for free and store your luggage in lockers close to your bed. Each bunk bed has its own nightstand and plug so no need to worry about charging your phone or computer at night. Getting my towel dried up after a shower can be tricky in some hostels I’ve stayed in but each room has their own wall coat racks there.

If you worry about noise in the dorms, the hostel offers a free sets of earplugs at the reception but apart from potential snoring from other guests or people laughing in the patio, the dorms are very quiet.

In the summer you can borrow your own personal mini fan to plug in by your bed, which is a real treat during heat waves.

Facilities

The hostel’s outside patio is definitely one of its main qualities. In summer you can relax in the long chairs or hammocks in the summer, eat convivial homemade dinners with other guests around the big table, enjoy their smooth playlists… feels like a real break from the city life while being downtown. I really enjoyed the colored Street Art painting.

Communal showers are clean and convenient. Each one of them has a towel hanger and a chair for your clothes or toiletry bag.

The common areas are spacious and beautifully decorated, however, the kitchen is a bit too small for more then 2 guests at a time and their fridge has limited space.

Breakfast may be 5 euros but their ‘All you can eat’ French buffet is wonderful and definitely worth the price! It includes crêpes, pastries, baguettes, jams, cereals, fruits, tea, coffee and fruit juices.

All year long, the staff organizes different walking tours, Apéro-pétanque (which is a perfect mix of drinking wine, savouring cheeses and deli meats and playing a ball game called pétanque), winecrawls, local beer and BBQ nights, homemade dinners, crêpe parties and a Yoga Brunch on Sundays. I would absolutely recommend their activities: great way to meet other travelers and learn more about the city for very low prices!

What makes this a luxury hostel

I particularly enjoyed the amount of services that this hostel offers. You can rent bikes and pocket Wi-Fi (which allows you to have internet on your tablet or smartphone all day everywhere you go for only 4 euros), borrow personal fans, adaptors, chargers, hair dryers, iron boards, download their free App for itineraries and addresses… Everything is very well thought of to make any traveller’s stay in Lyon as pleasant as possible.

With only about 40 beds, you will enjoy its intimate atmosphere while having fun in every activity they organize for locals and guests.

Factbox

Booking via Hostelworld.com, the price per night ranges from €20 in low season to €34 in high season and December going up to €43 for a dorm bed during the festival of Lights in Lyon.

The price for the private room ranges between €65 in low season to €85 in high season and up to €120 in December.

Best Quiet Hostels of Europe https://budgettraveller.org/best-quiet-hostels-of-europe/ https://budgettraveller.org/best-quiet-hostels-of-europe/#comments Tue, 28 Jun 2016 07:03:59 +0000 http://budgettraveller.org/?p=8223 Today on the BudgetTraveller we are talking about quiet hostels. Not party hostels.

Does the word ‘hostel’ conjure up images of raucous, loud, after hour parties attended by very young people leaving behind the aftermath of a ‘happening night’? Are you someone who likes to wind down after a long day of sightseeing with a good book? Or are you just that person, who not unreasonably, requires a restorative night of undisturbed sleep after embarking on a busy day of sightseeing in an unknown city? Look no further… we have the definitive list of quiet hostels- each of them an oasis of tranquility. Slip off those sturdy walking shoes after a long day of activity and luxuriate in the calm of these quiet hostels.

1) Plas Curig Hostel- Snowdonia, Wales

Beautiful interiors, superb facilities, and the stunning lush green landscape of Snowdonia make Plas Curig one of Europe’s best hostels. Once you come here, your opinion of hostels will change forever. Plas Curig is in a dreamy location in the picturesque village of Capel Curig at the foot of Snowdonia. Come here to escape. I spent most of my time snug in the lounge, admiring the mist-shrouded views of Moel Siabod in the distance with the river Llugwy at its foot, winding its way to Betws-y-Coed. It’s also not far away from the beautiful stretch of North Wales coastline, so it’s a great location for exploring the great Welsh outdoors. The staff here are a great asset to this place – they’re extremely knowledgeable with lots of great tips of nearby hiking trails and places to eat. They offer guided walks of the area and wildlife tours for a small fee. The hostel offers an excellent self-catering kitchen and a large separate dining area. The communal entrance area includes a well-stocked library. Stay warm by the wood-burning stove in the lounge and enjoy sitting by the broad bay windows, perfect for spending hours gazing at the beautiful scenery. The free Wi-Fi is excellent. Beautiful interiors, top-notch facilities, and a great location makes this stunning abode the best hostel I’ve seen in Britain.

A bed in the dorm room starts at 20 pounds per person; family rooms from 90 pounds per room per night.

Lisbon-Central-Hostel-Double-Room

Lisbon Central Hostel Double Room

2) Lisbon Central Hostel

is in an excellent location in Marques de Pombal just across from Lisbon’s grandest boulevard, the stunning Avenida da Liberdade. Just around the corner is the Marques De Pombal metro station, which is on the blue line that takes you straight to the airport. Baixa and Bairro Alto is just a 20-minute walk from the hostel or a few stops on the metro. The staff here (special mention for Ricardo) are warm, welcoming and from moment one, will make you feel like you’re being welcomed into someone’s home. They really go the extra mile here to help you with any of your queries like finding the best restaurant, mending a torn pocket in your trouser or even helping you out with your laundry. After a few days living there, I felt like I had known the staff for a long time. It’s that kind of place. Hostel has a daily roster of activities to keep guests entertained. It has a dedicated cinema room complete with projector where they host their weekly film nights. They also host the quirky ‘Milkshake Monday’ where each guest gets a free milkshake. On weekends, Ricardo takes guests out for his legendary pub-crawl across some of Lisbon’s best nightlife hotspots. In the summer, they have a nice enclosed courtyard where guests can congregate and chat into the late hours. They have a cool mini refrigerator in the reception area where guests can help themselves to ice-cold beers for €1. Please keep in mind that this is not a party hostel but still a sociable one where you easily meet fellow guests.

A private room for two people with twin beds and ensuite will set you back 60 Euros per night. A bed in a 4 Bed Female Dorm will cost 21 Euros.

YHA Grinton

YHA Grinton

4) YHA Grinton

Situated in the Yorkshire Dales, Grinton will not feature highly on the dream England itinerary of many popular travel guidebooks. The reason I picked Grinton is due to its scenic location in the heart of the Northern Yorkshire Dales. There is a beautiful YHA hostel here, a former shooting lodge, which offers panoramic views of the surrounding Yorkshire Dales. The joy of visiting this part of the world is the gorgeous scenery and landscapes that earned Yorkshire the moniker ‘God’s own country.’ This hostel is the perfect base for a relaxed walking holiday and also if you are a keen mountain biker this will delight you. The other star feature of this hostel is their luxury camping pods. Housing upto 4 and starting from just £50, these camping pods are very comfortable and an excellent alternative to camping. This unique hostel also boasts a gorgeous honeymoon suite complete with a freestanding roll top bath on the top floor – perfect for couples. Prices of private rooms at YHA Grinton start from £39 while dorms room start from £18.

Beds here are from 10 pounds and family rooms from 29 pounds per night.

Loft Mountain Hostel, Bourg St Maurice, France

Loft Mountain Hostel, Bourg St Maurice, France

5.Loft Mountain Hostel

This hostel is just a 10-minute walk from Bourg St Maurice train station. Just a five-minute walk to the Les Arcs express funicular, Loft offers excellent access to the huge Paradiski area, which has three parks, two half-pipes and over 400 km of skiable piste. The Loft Mountain Hostel looks like a very chic French chalet but the interior is very spacious, comfortable and homely. The living room is like that of a 5-star ski resort, with big, comfy sofas and large windows, with a huge 40-inch plasma screen TV with Sky channels. Outside, there is a nice terrace and garden patio area where guests can relax in the sun. The kitchen is probably my favourite part of the Loft – so much so that I featured Loft in my list of top five luxury hostel kitchens. There is a Lidl supermarket right across the road that stocks a number of local French specialties, so you won’t have to go far to find ingredients for your next meal. I loved visiting Vanoise National Park, a short drive away. Bourg St Maurice has weekend markets where you can get your hands on some stunning local fare – from the ripest, juiciest tomatoes to freshly baked baguettes to deliciously nutty Beaufort. The key thing I loved about my stay was just chilling out in the Loft and the village of Bourg with its quaint narrow streets, patisseries, nice restaurants, and weekend markets. If you’re looking for more excitement pop up to Les Arcs 1800 on a Friday and Saturday evening where there are a few good bars and nightclubs.

One night’s stay at the hostel will set you back 30 euros per night.

Casa Gracia Hostel Barcelona

Casa Gracia Hostel, Barcelona

6) Casa Gracia Barcelona

As you can tell from the first word ‘Casa’, the concept of this hostel is all about feeling at home – a ‘home in Gracia’ — and that’s what they focus on offering their guests. The hostel is centrally located on the grand boulevard of Paseo de Gracia in the neighbourhood of Gracia, close to Gaudi’s la Pedrera and Casa Batlló. You are away from the touristy drag of Las Ramblas, Barrio Gothic, and the menace of pickpockets. Choose from a variety of rooms- from six-bed dorm rooms and one-, two-, three-, four-, and five-bed private ensuite rooms, all of which are spacious, cosy and quiet. They have a regular programme of events in the hostel and the staff are really friendly and helpful. An oasis of peace in the city, this is a great hostel to call home for a few days.

A private room for 2 persons will typically cost 54 Euros per night. Book it here.

Cocomama Hostel, Amsterdam, Netherlands

Cocomama Hostel, Amsterdam, Netherlands

7) Cocomama and Ecomama Amsterdam.

A beautiful 130-year-old building with high ceilings and chandeliers, a garden complete with picnic tables and gnomes, a cuddly hostel cat called Joop, a kitchen stocked with beers for €1, a hostel run by a bunch of energetic ladies who know the city like the back of their hand plus an authentic, not-too- touristy location – what more could you want from a hostel in Amsterdam?

Ecomama Hostel, Amsterdam, Netherlands

Ecomama Hostel, Amsterdam, Netherlands

Ecomama is a green and luxurious update to its sister hostel in Amsterdam, Cocomama. Similar to Cocomama, Ecomama places a big emphasis on the social aspect and has a large communal space, a big kitchen and a real teepee tent where guests can meet and interact. It has 7 different types of rooms tailored to a wide variety of people, from the El Cheapo room for those on a shoestring, to a Double Deluxe for a romantic night for two. The hostel has impressive green credentials- from a water saving system, green roof to a beautiful range of recycled design furniture. The icing on the cake? Ecomama donates €1 for every night that you sleep at the hotel to NGO’s and good causes she supports, such as Niños de Guatemala which aims to improve society through education and entrepreneurship in Guatemala. Dorms run from 29 Euros, doubles start from 90 Euros although prices may be differ according to the date. Book it here.

Bus Hostel, Reykjavik

Bus Hostel, Reykjavik, Iceland

8) Bus Hostel Reykjavik

Formerly used as the office of a bus company (hence the name), Bus Hostel opened its doors in May 2013 and it has welcomed a wide range of guests since then, from a globetrotting pensioner backpacker to a couple of newly-weds who asked staff members to be witnesses as their wedding. Bus Hostel has communal dorms, rooms with just four or six bunk beds, ideal for those preferring a little more privacy and three “Ritz” rooms cater for couples who want a double bed and some privacy. All the communal bedrooms have spacious lockers for valuables and if you do choose to have the bed linen they offer at a small additional cost then you will be guaranteed a cozy night’s sleep on a perfectly plump pillow and cotton fresh white sheets. All the bedrooms are wonderfully minimalist in a way that only Nordic countries can achieve, though do expect the odd quirky detail. Bus Hostel is located less than ten minutes walk from the city’s BSI central bus station and you can find yourself in the centre of Reykjavik at the foot of the impressive Hallgrímskirkja Cathedral within fifteen minutes walk. The bar serves cheap beer and wine and I warmed to the additional touches that I didn’t know hostels were known for like the book swap cupboard, free wifi, free luggage storage and the free food shelf in the kitchen. A notoriously expensive country and city to travel in, Bus Hostel is currently the cheapest hostel and budget accommodation available in Reykjavik.

Prices for a bed in a dorm start at 2800 ISK (£15) a night in low season and 4750 ISK (£25) in high season. A double room is 9100 ISK (£50) in low season and 12990 ISK (£70) when summer rolls around and this includes towels and bedding. Book it here

Jughendeberg Nuremburg

Nuremberg Jughenderberge

9) Nuremberg Jugendherberge

Nuremberg may not figure prominently on the list of top destinations to visit but with it’s magical Xmas markets,  important history, relaxed easygoing vibe, great restaurants and pedestrian friendly cobbled streets , compact old town -it is the perfect place to visit for a long weekend. You can expect family friendly attractions that include the city’s unique complex of underground tunnels and dungeons plus excellent museums like the Children’s Museum, Toy Museum, School Museum or the Germanisches Nationalmuseum, (for a guide to the city, please check out my earlier 48 Hour Guide to Nuremberg). An even better reason for the family to visit is the opportunity for the kids to spend the night in a 500 year old fairytale medieval castle. The newly refurbished Jugendherberge Nuremberg is housed within the thick walls of the city’s Kaiserstellung Castle which towers above the city’s old town. The hostel has excellent facilities. Ultra-modern rooms, all with en-suite shower and toilet. There is an excellent bar and bistro where you can choose to dine plus their generous breakfast buffet is the perfect way to start your day. Other key facilities include a play room, guest kitchen, facilities for warming baby food and drinks, bottle warmer, highchairs, cots and a toilet seat for children, bathroom stool, nappy changing pad and nappy bin.

11) Main Square Hostel, Zagreb

is ideally located right in the heart of Zagreb’s city centre, very close to the main square called Ban Jelačić Square. If you are in the city as a visitor it is the perfect place to start your day’s wanderings. Most of Zagreb’s top highlights are a stone’s throw away and can be reached on foot. The hostel is placed in a very cosy neighbourhood, on Tkalčićeva Street. There are an abundance of coffee shops, eateries ( Amelie for cakes and coffee) boutiques and galleries nearby. The hostel is fairly new and very modern in design. The dorm rooms here are some of the nicest I have seen in a hostel. Hostel staff are really friendly and helpful. After 11pm, there is a policy of silence to ensure all the guests can settle down to a good nights sleep.

Sleeping in the 8 bed dorm in the high season will cost 18 Euros per night per person; 55 Euros per room for the 2 bed room with ensuite bath.

12) Mountain Hostel Tarter, Andorra

This hostel, which resembles more of a mountain lodge is nestled in the heart of the Pyrenean mountains of Andorra and has a rustic, outdoor appeal to it. It is the dream location for mountaineers and hikers but people seeking rest and relaxation whilst contemplating the beauty of nature would find themselves at home here. It is a year round location. There are things to do both in the winter and summer: you can ski or hike to your heart’s content. The lodge itself is 200 years old and has many modern comforts. Outdoor activities you can partake in here are: skiing, snowboarding, telemarking, randonée skiing, freestyling, freeriding, mountain biking, downhill biking and trekking. After a grueling day of outdoor activity this hostel is the perfect place to relax.

Also here is a round up of the Best Family Friendly Hostels in Europe.

I will leave you with the words of Virginia Woolf who said:

“How much better is silence; the coffee cup, the table. How much better to sit by myself like the solitary sea-bird that opens its wings on the stake. Let me sit here for ever with bare things, this coffee cup, this knife, this fork, things in themselves, myself being myself.”

Even if it is not possible to be forever solitary and silent, perhaps there are times on a busy trip that these moments are needed. I hope you will find them in these hand-picked quiet hostels.
