Four Activities You Should Try Before the Summer Ends

“Summer. Hair gets lighter. Skin gets darker. Water gets warmer. Drinks get colder. Music gets louder. Nights get longer. Life gets better.” -Author Unknown

As the month of June is in our midst, we can finally resign to the fact that the season of summer is drawing to a close. However before the skies turn darker and before the sun retreats for days at a time, it would only be right to bid the best season of the year an appropriate farewell. When the opening of classes commence, the streets of any major on the Philippines will be jam packed with cars once more (and perhaps twice more than usual), so take advantage of the opportunity before summer finally fizzles out. So, book your accommodations—may that be an Airbnb booking in any condo in Manila, prepare your budget and enjoy the last leg of your summer. As the Philippine Independence Day falls on a Monday, you have a rare avenue for a long weekend holiday to which you can bid your summer a proper adieu. You do not even need to book a ticket for these destinations and activities as they are all situated in Luzon.

So, without further ado, here are some of the experiences you should partake in before the rainy season starts

1.) Be a daredevil

The saying that goes “You only live once” or YOLO for brevity has some truth to it, but not in the sense that everyone seems to be mistaking it for. While you should live your life out to the fullest, this does not mean that you should throw all safety precautions out the window. However, it would be good to introduce a little risk once in a while in our lives—after all, summer only comes once a year, you might as well do it now. Ride a 4X4 on the sand dunes of Ilocos Norte and go on an ATV adventure through different terrains. And hey, while you are at it, why not shout “YOLO” as well?

2.) Rediscover classic dishes

We all had a favorite dish while we were growing up. Whether it was our mom’s homemade halo-halo, our grandmother’s sizzling sisig or a distinctly flavored ice cream—all of which are great staple foods for the summer. Nowadays, with a lot of epicurean innovations, it is no surprise that these cuisines were given a modern twist which you should try at least once. Head on to Pampanga for some crunchy sisig or a spin on the Cordon Bleu by using Laing. Before summer ends, go on a food adventure and take your taste buds on a culinary and gastronomic experience.

3.) See Manila differently

The city of Manila has always been associated with progress—unfortunately, along with that comes the perpetual traffic, the heavily industrialized cities and towns, pollution, smog and the like. So much so, that individuals living in Manila can no longer appreciate the beauty it once had before all the skyrises have been erected. Before summer ends, take a stroll around Metro Manila and appreciate the beauty it has. You can even take it up a notch by opting to have a quick reprieve in one of Manila’s many hotels for a lush and pampered stay.

4.) Roadtrip to the North

If you want to make the most out of your weekend, head up north and take the La Union-Vigan and Ilocos Norte route. Seeing as the La Union Expressway, SCTEX and TPLEX have already opened, a trip up north is much more accessible and convenient to commuters. Brush up on your skimboarding skills or learn how to surf in La Union then bask yourself in the beauty of Vigan. Be sure to take Instagram-worthy photos of yourself standing amid the cobblestones of Calle Crisologo as well. Lastly, wrap your trip by sampling the dishes of Ilocos Norte and marvel at its magnificent beauty.
